I first met Bobby Meader in Boulder City at a show I was playing with local musician Jessie Owens. Bobby was holding a case full of harmonicas that he would later use to accompany Owens' music. What I didn't know then, in that in that stuffy small-town bar, is that Bobby had his own solo music and apparently one hell of a following.
This past Friday the Beauty Bar revealed a secret world that had been kept from Las Vegans for far too long. Four bands from God knows where came together to play a show in honor of Bobby Meader's birthday. The genres varied between punk bands like Narrowed and Dogfight Diary to more folky bands like Leftmore and the vocally abrasive one man band Jessie Owens.
The night ended with the headlining Bobby Meader Music band. Bodies had filled the venue to near capacity, waiting through four bands just to hear this previously undiscovered gem. It was impressive and inspiring to see local bands draw in such a large crowd. Bobby Meader's set was long, but no one seemed to lose interest or get tired as it got later and later.
What I thought was going to be a more or less typical local gig downtown turned out to be an eye-opening venture into a world unknown. So for those of you who didn't know Bobby Meader, now you can't say you're surprised.
