We took our seats in the very last row as Director Sirc Michaels handed out “splatter zone” shirts to the audience members in the first two rows. We would later appreciate those seats, as the actual splatter zone reached as far back as row 8ish.
I’m not a huge fan of musicals, but when you have singalongs whose refrain is “All the Men in My Life Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons”, what’s not to like? As small as the Onyx is, the set transformation between scenes was impressive. Even more impressive is that none of the cast seemed to slip (I was sure someone would eventually take a fall) on the vast amount of fake blood while entering and exiting the set.
Ben Stobber looks like a leaner Bruce Campbell, even making similar facial expressions. Elizabeth Matthews proves to be a secret weapon, coming alive (literally) during the second half of the performance as Cheryl. Nicole Unger gets scantily-clad as Annie, and Brian “Mickey” Roark played his role as Scott very on-point, which is exactly what was needed.
Vocal director Nancy West deserves applause as well; this very DIY group was in-tune and on-key. We’re very interested to see what Sirc Michaels has in store for the future, but for now (as he would say it) Get the F@#k over to the Onyx and check out Evil Dead the Musical !
